In remote Antarctica, a group of American research scientists are disturbed at their base camp by a helicopter shooting at a sled dog. When they take in the dog, it brutally attacks both human beings and canines in the camp and they discover that the beast can assume the shape of its victims. A resourceful helicopter pilot (Kurt Russell) and the camp doctor (Richard Dysart) lead the camp crew in a desperate, gory battle against the vicious creature before it picks them all off, one by one.

Based on John W. Campbell, Jr.’s novella „Who Goes There?“—which was also adapted in 1951 by Howard Hawks with The Thing from Another World (which makes an appearance on a television in Carpenter’s Halloween) and with the episode „Ice“ from the first season of The X-Files in 1993—Carpenter’s body horror classic, THE THING, is the first entry of his ‚Apocalypse Trilogy‘ (alongside Prince of Darkness and In the Mouth of Madness).

The story follows a group of American researchers, led by 80s everyman Kurt Russell, in Antarctica who encounter a parasitic extraterrestrial life-form that assimilates, then imitates, other organisms. This results in a tense showdown, as the group succumbs to paranoia and refusal to trust each other, knowing that at any moment one of them could be The Thing.

It’s one of the great sci-fi horror films of the 1980s, that was completely trashed when it was originally released. Seriously, The New York Times called it „instant junk“. It’s hard to believe now, as the film was such a huge influence on everything from Stranger Things to both of Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs and The Hateful Eight.
